Instagram highlights are stories pinned permanently to a profile — they survive the 24-hour expiry and stay visible as long as the creator keeps them pinned. But "permanent" means "until the creator deletes them". If you want to preserve a highlight — your own or someone else's public one — you need to download the frames to your own storage.

What's in a highlight

A highlight is a collection of story frames. Each frame is either:

  • A photo (JPG, typically 1080×1920 portrait).
  • A short video (MP4, up to 60 seconds, portrait aspect).

Each frame is a separate file. A highlight with 20 frames downloads as 20 individual files — the same way stories work, because highlights are stories.

Getting the highlight URL

On Instagram web (instagram.com):

  1. Open the creator's profile.
  2. Click the highlight circle you want to save.
  3. Your URL bar now shows something like instagram.com/stories/highlights/12345678901234567/. Copy this.

On mobile (Instagram app):

  1. Open the profile.
  2. Long-press the highlight circle and tap Copy link.
  3. Or tap the highlight, then tap the three-dot menu on a specific frame → Copy link — this gives you the URL for that one frame.

Downloading every frame

  1. Go to the Instaclips story downloader (highlights share the story infrastructure).
  2. Paste the highlight URL.
  3. The preview shows each frame as a separate item — click Download on each.
  4. Rename the files with the highlight name and frame number, e.g. 2024-travel-01.jpg, so they stay ordered when you import them to a folder.

Music in highlights

Same rules as stories:

  • Music-sticker tracks (licensed catalogue) are overlaid at play-time and will NOT be in the downloaded MP4.
  • Creator-recorded audio (voiceover, embedded background music) IS in the file and plays normally.

See our story-with-music guide for the full story (pun intended) and the workaround for licensed overlays.

Can I download private-account highlights?

No. Private accounts gate all their content — stories, highlights, reels — at Instagram's servers. No anonymous tool can access them. See the private reels breakdown for the technical reason.

FAQ

Does the creator get notified when I download their highlight?

No. Instagram's "seen by" list only shows logged-in viewers who opened the highlight in the app. Anonymous downloads through Instaclips leave no trace on the creator's side.

How far back can I download highlights?

As far back as the creator has kept them pinned. A highlight pinned 3 years ago is just as downloadable as one pinned yesterday — as long as it's still visible on the profile.

What's the resolution I'll get?

Photos come through at 1080px on the long edge (Instagram's public delivery spec). Videos come through at 720p or 1080p depending on when they were uploaded. No upscaling is possible — you get exactly what Instagram serves to viewers.
